It's been 13 years since this damn war started. August 11, 2013: Trespasser, or Axe-Head, emerged from the ocean and rampaged through San Francisco until the army managed to drop a nuke on it. Millions died. The next attack hit Manila, in November. At that point, we realized this was a problem, and we formed the Pan Pacific Defense Corps in January of 2014. The next attack hit Cabo San Lucas in February. Then Scissure hit Sydney in May. It took 3 days for them to be able to lure it out to where the nuke wouldn't screw the place up even more. Somewhere along the way, people started calling them kaiju, a Japanese word meaning "giant beast". It was as good of a name as any. They called together a conference of smart people in Seoul to figure out how to stop this, and Dr. Jasper Schoenfeld stepped forward with the craziest idea; giant fighting robots. He literally got the idea watching his young son play with toys.
IT was the best idea they had, and on November 9, 2014, the Jaeger Program was officially launched. One of Dr. Schoenfeld's former students, Caitlin Lightcap, created the Pons, a neural uplink meant to allow the pilot to literally meld minds with the enormous machine. On January 30, 2015, Adam Casey died trying to drive Brawler Yukon. No one's certain if it was the seizure he was sent into due to the mental strain, or the 200 foot fall. On February 18, they tried again, and again, the pilot, Sergio D'onofrio, seized. But Dr. Lightcap, in an attempt to save Sergio, entered the neural link and performed the first successful Drift. At this point, it was discovered that two pilots were needed, to share the mental strain. On April 23, 2015, Karloff hit Vancouver, but Brawler Yukon was waiting. The ensuing battle resulted in the first kaiju killed by a Jaeger, and the first success of the multibillion dollar project.
The Jaeger Program really took off after that. Shatterdomes were established worldwide, jaegers were being built left, right and center, and it looked like we were winning for a moment. in 2020, the Anti-Kaiju Wall began construction, as the Jaegers seemed to be beginning to fail, and the kaiju attacks were increasing in frequency. In 2024, the Jaeger Program was defunded. Shatterdomes closed all over the world, except for Hong Kong. But they weren't done. Marshall Stacker Pentecost was not going to go down without a fight.
In 2025, Pentecost boarded Striker Eureka, one of two remaining Jaegers, the rest having been destroyed in combat, with Chuck Hanson. Gipsy Danger, piloted by Raleigh Becket and Mako Mori, launched alongside them, and the two went to go try and drop a nuke in the Breach, the portal the kaiju were emerging from. IN the ensuing fight, Eureka detonated her payload, killing the kaiju guarding the portal. A final attempt was made, and Gipsy tried to throw herself in and overload her nuclear reactor. They escaped, but the explosion didn't destroy the Breach, as expected. But something unexpected happened; the Breach appeared to have been locked shut. It was still present, but it was closed, and no kaiju were coming through.
This put the wind back into the Jaeger Program's sails. In the wake of the wall having failed to defend Sydney where Striker Eureka had succeeded, funding sailed back into the Program. The old Shatterdomes were reopened, and two more constructed. Several new Jaegers were created under the direction of Marshall Hercules Hanson, and things were looking up.
But it appears our respite is over. 18 months later, the kaiju are returning, and they're mad. But we're ready. We have cancelled the apocalypse before, and we can do it again.
In the immortal words of Raleigh Becket: "Let's go fishing."
